Games

There will be a wide range of games available to enjoy at the event. If you are interested in hosting or teaching any of the games below, please contact the event steward. Check the schedule to find when instruction and game play is scheduled for the following games.

The Games We Will Play

  • Card Games

    First referenced in 1377, a variety of card games developed in Europe, some of which are still played today. Since card games were generally attached to gambling, many areas outlawed the playing of card games.

    • Karnoeffel

      2 teams of 2. The oldest document card game based on collecting tricks using a trump suit. This game can be played with a modern deck using the Queen and Jack as the Over and Under, respectively.

    • One and Thirty

      2 to 8 Players. One of the simplest traditional card games, which is still played in various forms today, appears in literature as early as 1440. The goal is to be holding card with a total value as close to 31 without going over.

  • Dice Games

  • Physical Games

    Physical games are game played with full sized objects and are generally played outdoors. Some physical games may be played indoors.

    • Base

      An even number of 4 or more players. Though Base was primarily a children’s game of tag and capture, persons of any age can enjoy this game.

    • Egg Jousting

      Egg Jousting pits two challengers against one another attempting to break the others hard-boiled egg. Each match has a challenger and a defender.   • Table Games

    Table games were very common, but only a few survive today. Several games similar to Backgammon were popular along with Chess and Merels.

    • Hnefatafl

      2 Players: A capture the king game played by two players on a grid.

    • Merels

      2 Players. Merels is a simple capture the opponent type table game. It can be played on a paper board with coins or checkers.
